Sewing for Beginners

Sewing is in my blood. My grandmother sewed all types of things. Clothes, quilts, you name it, I’m sure she sewed it.

Her mother and her mother’s mother probably sewed as well. My mother took on the sewing gene. And, now I’ve got it.

I wish I was a better sewer. I just don’t have the time to dedicate to it right now, and I don’t see much time for sewing opening up any time soon.

However, I do know my way around a sewing machine. Kind of.

I can sew a quilt.  It will look like a beginner quilt, but I guarantee the colors will look fabulous together and it will keep you cozy.

I’ve sewn a few quilts for gifts and have never had a complaint.

I’ve sewn other things, like dresses and costumes for my step daughter and a really cool gardening apron for my mom.

I’ve also sewn mittens for koalas that were burned in wildfires and sent them to Australia to help the little sweeties heal. That was one of my favorite projects.

One time, I tried to sew a dress for my best friend, Rachael.

We had a YWCA event to attend called Women of Distinction and the theme was Mad Men.

So, I tried to sew her an adorable 1960’s dress that she could wear to the event.

We spent about an hour at the fabric store looking through the catalogs trying to find the perfect 60’s dress.

We found one that was exactly like the dresses they wear in Mad Men. It looked like it fit in all the right places and was very mod.

We also found a really cute pattern for a fall cape/sweater thingy.

We bought the patterns and fabric for both and were on our way.

Two weeks later, I sewed the sleeve to the skirt of the dress, and the cape looked like a big tablecloth.

I guess I bit off more than I could chew.

With that said, Pinterest wasn’t really a thing back then, so I really didn’t have much to learn from except some websites that just confused me more.

I didn’t know then that sewing takes PRACTICE. And, a lot of it.

Anyway, my mom showed me a lot of what I know now.

Oh, and my neighbor, Diana, showed me how to use her embroidery machine which she so generously donated to me when she bought a new one. Thanks Diana!

But, there is a plethora of knowledge out there on the big World Wide Web and Pinterest that is just waiting for you to read!

I’ve also learned how to knit some really cool things from the World Wide Web and Pinterest.

I can’t forget to mention YouTube, you know, for when you need someone to actually show you tutorials.

20 of the best sewing posts for beginners

I can get lost for hours just reading up on sewing techniques and watching videos on how to sew this or that. It’s really relaxing.

I’m big on self care and making sure you take time for yourself. Sewing is one of those things for me.

There’s something about starting with nothing and finishing with a completely useful object/thing that is so satisfying.

Kind of like mowing the lawn. It’s like an art project and I like to sit back and enjoy my work when it’s done.

I know, totally random and not about sewing, but I just had to say it. I like to mow.

There are tons of great beginner resources for new sewers, but I thought I would share the top 20 that I’ve found.

The next time I get time to sew something fun, I’ll make sure I document it and share it with you.

But don’t hold your breath. That could be awhile.
